Grinder Maintenance: Extending the Life of Your Investment

A well-maintained grinder can last for years—even decades. Here are proven tips to extend the life of your grinder and keep it performing like new.

Daily Care

Brush After Use

Keep a small brush with your grinder. A quick brush of the teeth after each use prevents buildup before it starts. Many grinders come with a small brush—use it!

Don't Overfill

Overfilling puts extra stress on the teeth and threading. Fill the grinding chamber about 2/3 full for optimal results and reduced wear.

Grind Gently

Let the teeth do the work. Excessive force can wear threads and dull teeth prematurely. A few smooth rotations work better than aggressive grinding.

Weekly Maintenance

Clear the Screen

Tap your grinder to knock kief through a clogged screen. A toothbrush gently brushed across the screen keeps it flowing.

Check Threading

Ensure all pieces screw together smoothly. If you notice resistance, clean the threads with a dry brush. Never force stuck threads.

Monthly Deep Clean

Once a month (or when needed), give your grinder a thorough cleaning:

  1. Disassemble completely
  2. Freeze for 30 minutes (recover extra kief!)
  3. Brush all parts thoroughly
  4. Soak metal parts in isopropyl alcohol
  5. Scrub stubborn spots
  6. Rinse and dry completely

See our complete cleaning guide for detailed instructions.

Storage Tips

  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • Keep away from moisture
  • Consider a protective case for travel
  • Don't store with herbs inside long-term

What to Avoid

  • Water alone: Can cause oxidation in some metals
  • Harsh chemicals: Stick to isopropyl alcohol
  • Dishwasher: Too harsh for grinder finishes
  • Metal picks on teeth: Can chip or dull them
  • Forcing stuck parts: Risks thread damage

Signs It's Time to Replace

Even with great care, grinders eventually wear out:

  • Teeth are noticeably dull
  • Threads are stripped or won't stay tight
  • Screen is torn or permanently clogged
  • Magnetic lid no longer holds
  • Excessive wobble between pieces
