How to Clean Your Grinder: A Step-by-Step Guide
A clean grinder works better and lasts longer. Residue buildup can make grinding difficult and affect the quality of your herbs. Here's how to keep your grinder in top shape.
When to Clean Your Grinder
Clean your grinder when you notice:
- Difficulty twisting or grinding
- Sticky residue on teeth
- Clogged kief screen
- Visible buildup in chambers
- Decreased grinding efficiency
Regular users should deep clean monthly. Light users can go 2-3 months between cleanings.
What You'll Need
- Isopropyl alcohol (90%+ recommended)
- Small brush or old toothbrush
- Toothpicks or small picks
- Paper towels or clean cloth
- Small container for soaking
- Freezer (optional but helpful)
Step 1: Disassemble Completely
Take apart all pieces of your grinder. For a 4-piece grinder, you'll have: lid, grinding chamber, collection chamber, and kief catcher. Keep track of any small parts like O-rings.
Step 2: Freeze (Optional)
Put your disassembled grinder in the freezer for 30 minutes. This makes residue brittle and easier to remove, plus you'll recover more kief. After freezing, tap each piece over a clean surface to collect the loosened material.
Step 3: Dry Brush
Use a small brush to remove loose debris from:
- Between teeth
- Thread grooves
- Screen mesh
- Chamber walls
A stiff-bristled brush works best. An old toothbrush is perfect for this job.
Step 4: Soak in Alcohol
Place metal parts in a container and cover with isopropyl alcohol. Let soak for 20-30 minutes. For heavy buildup, soak longer or overnight.
Important: Don't soak acrylic/plastic grinders in alcohol—it can damage them. Use warm soapy water instead.
Step 5: Scrub
After soaking, scrub each piece with your brush. Pay special attention to:
- Tooth edges and gaps
- Screen holes (use a toothpick)
- Thread grooves
- Chamber corners
Step 6: Rinse and Dry
Rinse all pieces with warm water to remove alcohol residue. Dry thoroughly with a clean cloth, then let air dry completely before reassembling. Any remaining moisture can cause issues.
Quick Cleaning Tips
For between deep cleans:
- Brush teeth after each use
- Keep the screen clear by tapping the grinder
- Use a coin in the collection chamber to help push material through
- Store in a dry place
Screen Maintenance
Clogged screens are the most common issue. To unclog:
- Freeze the screen for 30 minutes
- Gently brush both sides
- Soak in alcohol if still clogged
- Use a toothpick for stubborn spots
Prevention Tips
Reduce cleaning frequency by:
- Not overfilling the grinder
- Grinding drier material when possible
- Regular light maintenance
- Using quality grinders (they resist buildup better)
